Representation of Gender
Representation of Gender
Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of gender using the following:
Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
Editing
Sound
Mise en scène
Further into the scene Alice tries to use her sex appeal as a woman to seduce Luther to distract him from his interrogation of her, momentarily this appears as though it may have worked and Alice had used her female superiority to get what she wanted. However, Luther does in turn reject her but it does show that she may have slight hold over him in the sense that he knows she is willing to have sex with him to avoid the whole situation and it looked as if it may have crossed his mind. This would also prove that Alice could be considered a 'mad, bad, dangerous' woman and so doesn't really care how he views her as a woman or anybody else. This is significant as the camera angle does show a close up of the two stood facing one another in an intimate position glorifying her sexual power over him, this camera shot emphasizes her sex appeal.
Towards the start of the extract, it is highlighted by Alice how exhausted Luther looks and she invites him in. This could reflect the stereotype that men go out to labourous jobs, as to why Luther is exhausted after a long day at work, and women stay out home and keep their house guest suitable, as to why Alice invited him in to a clean looking home. It could be argued this represents the old fashioned way of life.
The scene then transitions to where Alice takes off her coat, it's an over the shoulder shot and shows us as viewers Alice's perspective of the room, Luther being in the focus and centre could indicate he is her main focus during this entire extract, where as it appears Luther is more concerned about his investigation than Alice's presence. He just wants her there to interrogate and nothing more. We then witness a combination of camera movements such as close ups and mid shots once it has moved away from Alice's perspective, the close up's are of Alice and could indicate her being under pressure from Luther's interrogation and this could be considered him imposing his dominance.
A lot of editing has been carried out on this extract, for example shot reversed shots are often used. This emphasises the characters almost staring each other out through the scene which shows the tension between the too. This in turn creates an atmosphere which potentially indicates domestic verbal or physical abuse, despite it not being included in the extract, there's always the sense that it could take place when the characters become less calm and uncomfortable with each others questioning.

How does the Mis-en-Scene in your still help to construct the identity of the character?
How does the Mis-en-Scene in your still help to construct the identity of the character?
This image is from a TV drama called Narcos. It shows a
character who looks tired, judging by scruffy hair and facial expression. He is
clearly the main focus as it is a close up camera shot on his face and the
camera hasn’t focused on any of the people we can behind.
Also in the image we can see the metal gate restricting our
view. It may represent the characters restrictions, his expression looks as if
he wants to get out but he could possibly be trapped. It shows the characters
limitations and his struggle to get to where he wants to get to. With the metal
gate and the out of focus bodies behind the character facing him or approaching
may indicate it is a dangerous situation and location.
The lighting in this image is fairly bright, this could be a
connotation that things in the image aren’t all as bad as they originally seem.
The grass is a bright green and sky looks clear, weather often portrays mood
and emotions. This would indicate good moods, a fresh start and open, happy
emotions.

Music video male gaze task
The male gaze refers to the way visual arts are structured around a masculine viewer. There are three different gazes;
In this video the main feature is Megan Fox. She portrays the role of a women in an abusive relationship and therefore in this video there are a number of intimate and violent scenes, often there are cuts of clips put in to please the spectators gaze.
The video presents violence and lust combined together to create a very fiery relationship, our first insight into this is just at around 18 seconds in where it shows Megan Fox with flames in her hands, this could give us an early indication of the how dysfunctional the relationship presented in the video is. The flames burn her hands yet she carries on holding it because she enjoys it. This also shows the characters point of view, one of the three gazes, as a reflection of her life at that point.
The video then proceeds into intimate clips within the relationship. This is where be see the sexualising of the female body, she is relegated to the status of an object. As clearly shown in the video the male allows himself to go out separately and pick up other women whilst getting drunk however Megan Fox's characters behaviour is constantly under scrutiny. This shows the dominance to the male again contributing to the male gaze.
Features of the male gaze include;
- The camera focuses on curves of female body- this is often done at different points through the video to attract male views.
- Men's reactions to events which occur to women- This is also a significant feature in the video, the male fights another man over the girl.
- Women relegated to the state of objects- Megan Fox is often thrown around and left by her partner except when they have sex.
