Music video male gaze task

The male gaze refers to the way visual arts are structured around a masculine viewer. There are three different gazes;
  • The person behind the camera
  • The characters point of view
  • The gaze of the spectator

  In this video the main feature is Megan Fox. She portrays the role of a women in an abusive relationship and therefore in this video there are a number of intimate and violent scenes, often there are cuts of clips put in to please the spectators gaze.

The video presents violence and lust combined together to create a very fiery relationship, our first insight into this is just at around 18 seconds in where it shows Megan Fox with flames in her hands, this could give us an early indication of the how dysfunctional the relationship presented in the video is. The flames burn her hands yet she carries on holding it because she enjoys it. This also shows the characters point of view, one of the three gazes, as a reflection of her life at that point.

The video then proceeds into intimate clips within the relationship. This is where be see the sexualising of the female body, she is relegated to the status of an object. As clearly shown in the video the male allows himself to go out separately and pick up other women whilst getting drunk however Megan Fox's characters behaviour is constantly under scrutiny. This shows the dominance to the male again contributing to the male gaze.

Features of the male gaze include;
  • The camera focuses on curves of female body- this is often done at different points through the video to attract male views.
  • Men's reactions to events which occur to women- This is also a significant feature in the video, the male fights another man over the girl.
  • Women relegated to the state of objects- Megan Fox is often thrown around and left by her partner except when they have sex.
